Making the inaccessible accessible

When I started teaching yoga back in 2016, I felt like a fraud because I could barely touch my toes.  I was easily the most inflexible yoga teacher I knew, and I quickly found that just doing more yoga wasn’t the answer.  In my quest for a more flexible body, what I found was much more substantial and life-changing: a deeper understanding of anatomy; the body’s potential for change; the world of strength and mobility training which I now consider indispensable for health; and the key to unlocking the learning of new movements at any age – the brain.  My body, my perspective, and my teaching transformed It was clear that there was infinite value in helping people become stronger and more mobile beyond the purpose of performing yoga poses, but to improve function in daily life.  I developed a passion for helping make inaccessible movements more accessible, especially for those left in the margins of the fitness industry – older adults, people with pain, and the average not-so-flexible-joe. I soon transitioned away from teaching yoga classes into movement coaching – a one-on-one style approach that allows me to build relationships with individuals and work with many different movement disciplines to help people move, feel, and live better.  

Working with pain

I grew up witnessing loved ones suffer from chronic pain. More than the pain itself, what I found most debilitating was the way they were treated by medical professionals. Made to feel irrational and broken, I watched as chronic pain became a story that defined their lives over time.  I subconsciously drifted toward wanting to be the antithesis of what I saw – toward help people with pain by offering support, encouragement, empathy, and science.  The science of pain has done a 180 in the past 20 years. What I’ve learned has completely and positively defined how I relate to my own pains and what it means to physically age.  I truly believe that what we know now has the power to make sweeping changes in the current chronic pain epidemic, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. I’m fortunate to have had incredible teachers who have helped shape the three guiding principles of my philosophy: Treat each client as a whole person, listen, and the body is infinitely adaptable.
